The Manassa Mauler followed the Carpentier win with victories over Jimmy Darcy and Tommy Gibbons (the lackluster Gibbons fight bankrupted the town of Shelby, Montana, which had promised a huge purse in order to stage it) and on September 14, 1921, he took on hard-charging heavyweight Luis Angel Firpo in front of 85,000 at New York's Polo Grounds.
