The NSWGR 48 Class was ordered to commence the conversion of branch lines to dieselisation and to see if branch line operating costs could be reduced. They became an immediate success, and by the early 1960's the heaviest trains in NSW were being hauled by multiply 48 class locomotives. They later went on to become the backbone of the NSW Fleet.

The 48 Class are a diesel electric locomotive ordered by the New South Wales Government Railways from 1959. Once the most ubiquitous locomotive in New South Wales (and Australia), the locomotives were built by A. E. Goodwin, based on Alco frames and prime movers, using General Electric (later AEI) electrical equipment.

The NSWGR 48 class diesel electric locomotive was part of a total of 212 Goodwin Alco DL531 locomotives built from the late 1950s onwards. Significant numbers are still in regular use in New South Wales and South Australia. The kit was a joint venture between O-Aust Kits and Bergs Hobbies. The model consists of pewter, lost wax and polyurethane.
