Na de val van de Berlijnse Muur, was het deel in de Bernauer Straße een van de langste stukken Muur dat bewaard bleef. Dat juist aan de Bernauer Straße een groot stuk originele Muur is behouden, berust niet op toeval. Hier liep de 'antifascistische verdedigingswal' vlak langs de huizen, waardoor de opgesloten bewoners van Oost-Berlijn.

De Berlijnse Muur was enerzijds het symbool van de tweedeling, anderzijds droeg de val van de muur op 9 november 1989 toe aan het einde van de Koude Oorlog..
