The PS2 uses two different lasers for blue discs (CD-ROMs) and silver discs (DVD-ROMs). So no, it doesn't make the laser "work harder". It is just blue discs that it won't read; everything else is fine. The PS2 laser assembly basically has 2 lasers in one. You have 2 potentiometers on it to control the intensity of the lasers you can turn with a tiny screwdriver. You can turn up the power for the CD laser just a bit as to not burn it out.

Re: My PS2 won\'t play discs with purple backs?!? Basically, it'll play all the DVD games but not the regular CD games. You could take it apart and clean it, but that would void the warranty if you still have one. A person from work had a similar problem, but his PS2 wouldn't read either (CD and DVD).
