Some passionate reviews on the net have likened the Shure M97xE to Shure's classic V15 range. Since Shure recommends moving on to a M97xE rather than replacing a worn V15 stylus, it appears Shure are confident in their cartridge's performance. They certainly package the thing nicely in a metal box, and mounted it looks pretty great too.

The Shure M97xE under review is my own personal cartridge that I purchased back in February. It was about 4 months old and has seen moderate usage at the time of its testing. It physically appears to be a nicely put together unit. Nothing feels loose or unduly fragile when handled appropriately. Releasing the stabilizer brush reveals that it is.

Especially when the two items you're comparing - in this case, Shure Brothers' V15VxMR and M97xE cartridges - bear a striking resemblance. In fact, their styli are even interchangeable. Don't get your hopes up thinking the $140 M97xE is basically a $400 V15VxMR with the exception of its stylus (elliptical vs. MicroRidge).

The 1999 M97xE was the last model from Shure before cartridge production ended in 2018. In 1995, Shure went through a severe downsizing of their cartridge manufacturing division and as a cost-cutting measure, ceased production of all prior models. The only model still in development was the V15VxMR and after it was released in 1997, R&D.

It's not that I dislike it, I am just curious how the Nagaoka compares to it. There is a guy on YouTube that did VERY extensive reviews of the m97xe and the Nagaoka and he concluded the Nagaoka was far better.
