The closed exterior of Grünewald's Isenheim Altarpiece depicts the Crucifixion in the central panel. St. Anthony is pictured on one wing, St. Sebastian on the other. On the predella, the base of the altarpiece, is an image of the Lamentation.

Begun around 1510, this monument was commissioned to adorn a monastic hospital run by the order of Saint Anthony in Isenheim, where hermit monks nursed.

Constructed and painted between 1512 and 1516, the enormous moveable altarpiece, essentially a box of statues covered by folding wings, was created to serve as the central object of devotion in an Isenheim hospital built by the Brothers of St. Anthony. St. Anthony was a patron saint of those suffering from skin diseases.
