The walled garden is open 8am-4pm Monday-Thursday, 8am-12 noon Friday. Located on the north side of town, Bridge End Garden has been described as a hidden gem. It is a beautiful restored Victorian Garden made up of a number of small interconnecting gardens and is full of surprises. There are entrances from Castle Street and Bridge Street.

About Bridge End Gardens. These perfectly laid out gardens were started in the mid 18th century by Atkinson Francis Gibson. They are particularly noted for the famous yew hedge maze in the Italian-Renaissance style planted in 1840, and now restored.

Bridge End Garden was created around 1840 by. Francis Gibson designed the Garden as a Francis Gibson, a local Quaker businessman who also built the Fry Art Gallery. Francis' daughter Elizabeth married Lewis Fry of Bristol and in 1918 the Fry family leased the Garden to the local council. It has been open to the public ever since.

Made up of a series of smaller interconnecting gardens including the Dutch Garden and a mature hedge maze, it is full of surprises. These gardens are absolutely lovely and are a series of 'compartments' including a sunken Dutch Garden, a Walled Garden and a Hedge Maze which you can get lost in. Don't miss them if you come to Saffron Walden. They are open all the time but the Walled Garden & the Maze do get locked up at the end of the day and if you visit on a winter weekend.
