The West pier was built in 1831 out of local sandstone and stands at 73 feet high. The East followed later in 1855 and stands at a slightly smaller 55 feet high. Both have amazing walks that approach them and in the summer months, you can climb the West lighthouse to the top.

The West Whitby Pier was constructed in 1632. It replaced the previous wooden pier, and this was followed in 1702 by the East Pier. The West Pier was illuminated until 1831 by a hexagonal lantern. Then, all passing colliers were required to pay a toll. Monies from this then went towards the maintenance and future improvement of the piers.

By 1790 Whitby was a massive producer of merchant ships. The piers were extended and altered many times to ensure they could guide ships safely into the harbour and lessen the channel's silting. The West Pier Lighthouse was added in 1840, and the East Pier Lighthouse in 1856. Pier extensions were added in 1912, and today's swing bridge.
