Rest and bake the challah. Continuing with the challah recipe (regardless of the shape), line a half sheet baking pan with a Silpat silicone mat or parchment paper. Transfer the shaped dough to the baking pan, then cover with greased plastic wrap. Let the shaped dough rise for 45 minutes in a warm place.

Instructions. Place the yeast, one teaspoon of sugar, and warm water in a small bowl and give a little stir. Let sit for 5-10 minutes, or until yeast is bubbly and foamy. To make the starter: Weigh your flour; or measure it by gently spooning it into a cup, then sweeping off any excess. Directions. In a small bowl, dissolve yeast in warm milk. In a large bowl, combine honey, butter, eggs, salt, yeast mixture and 2 cups flour; beat on medium speed until smooth. Stir in enough remaining flour to form a soft dough (dough will be sticky). Turn dough onto a floured surface; knead until smooth and elastic, 6-8 minutes.

Heat the butter in another small sauce pan until just melted. Set aside. 2. In a large bowl, add the warm water and whisk in the dry yeast. Set the yeast/water mixture aside for at least 5 minutes until the yeast has dissolved and is creamy. Whisk in the milk, sugar, cardamom, salt, and eggs until fully combined.

Repeat until half the loaf is braided, leaving the ends loose. Rotate the loaf. Now take the strand on the right and loop it under the center strand. Take the strand all the way on the left and loop that under the center strand. Repeat until the second half of the loaf is braided, leaving the ends loose again.

To make braided challah with 3 strands: Divide 1 piece of the dough into 3. Roll each piece between your palms and pull into long thin ropes about 18 inches (46 cm) long and 1 1/4 inches (3 cm) wide. Pinch 1 end of all the strands together and plait them: bring the rope on the right over the middle one, then bring the one on the left over it.

Prepare the Pistachio Cardamom Filling. Reserve 10 to 12 pistachios for topping the challah. Place remaining pistachios, sugar, butter and one tablespoon milk in food processor or blender. Blend or process only until it comes together, leaving a bit of a chunky consistency; don't over blend. Stir in more milk, one tablespoon at a time, only.
