The basic process involves layering butter or shortening with flour, chilling the dough in intervals, filling and shaping the dough, brushing with an egg wash, and then baking. Here are a few of our favorite kringle recipes to try this year: Danish Kringle. Caramel Pecan Kringle. Marzipan Christmas Kringle.


Christmas Kringles

Move the dough onto a baking sheet, and cover with egg wash and coarse sugar. Cover with plastic wrap and let the dough proof for 45 minutes in a warm place. Cook the pastry for 30 minutes or until golden at 375 degrees Fahrenheit. Remove from the heat and leave to cool. Add any sugar or topping you might want.

Cover and chill 2 hours before baking. Cover and chill the remaining beaten egg. Preheat oven to 375°F. Brush surface of each kringle with remaining beaten egg. Bake until golden, 25 minutes, rotating the baking sheets from front to back and top to bottom halfway through the baking time.

Take the end of each strip and push it through the hole you sliced in it to form a twist. Remove the jar in the center. In a small bowl, whisk together the egg and water. Brush the egg wash over the top of the pastry. Bake for 25-30 minutes or until golden brown. Once baked, whisk the glaze ingredients together.
