The CX's 4- and 5-speed transverse manual gearbox was completely new - and apparently extremely well-executed and used on several other cars, but this meant that the only new component of the whole car was a rather modest one.

Production models were either a standard wheelbase or a stretched, more luxurious, four-door fastback saloon, as well as a station wagon (estate), on the longer wheelbase.

The sensational CX initially came with warmed-over DS pushrod engines instead of the triple-rotor Wankel or the twin-cam flat-four planned in cahoots with NSU, but it would eventually come alive with the GTi. Ultimately, the late-'80s 168bhp Turbo could propel the car's highly streamlined bodyshell to a heady 138mph.
