Back in 1977 I had a yellow 1972 Renault 17 Gordini. It was first year they imported it to the states. Featured a 120hp 1500 cc engine with 4-speed and super cool interior/buckets/dash. I remember a typically French great ride that tracked like it was on rails at hwy speeds, lots of torque steer, awful brakes and leaky Bosch fuel injection.

A five-speed manual was standard Gordini fare, as were wider, 165 x 13 (vs. 155 x 13) Michelin radials. It's the Coupe Convertible versions of the 17TL and 17 Gordini 2+2 that really fascinate me, with their power-operated folding soft top that operated in fixed tracks, plus a snug, protective fiberglass topper that secured over this for winter.

This 1979 Renault R17 Gordini is the product of a recent ground up restoration after being abandoned for 15 years. It has been completely stripped, and everything has been replaced or restored to original spec, making this the closest thing you will find to a brand new Renault in the US. This is about the most unlikely candidate for a bare.

Gordini (French pronunciation:) is a division of Renault Sport Technologies (Renault Sport). In the past, it was a sports car manufacturer and performance tuner, established in 1946 by Amédée Gordini (1899-1979), nicknamed "Le Sorcier" (The Sorcerer). Gordini became a division of Renault in 1968 and of Renault Sport in 1976.

Scotty Gilbertson. With a crisp, modern design unlike many cars from the early-1970s, Renault created what was, in my opinion, a very nice-looking car. Historie Renault 17 Gordini

Renault's 15 and (later) 17 were built for eight years between 1971 and 1979. They were a couple of versions of the Renault 12 below the skin but used the Renault 16 TS engine for the 17 Gordini editions. Renault was having trouble selling cars in the U.S. in the 1970s, easily outnumbered by the German and Japanese competition.

The Renault 15 and 17 were a series of coupes that were introduced for the 1972 model year. These cars were largely coupe versions of the Renault 12 and featured a selection of inline four engines ranging from 1.3L to 1.6L. Both the 15 and 17 had very few differences, with the most notable changes being the 17's four round headlights and.

Vintage R&T Review: 1974 Renault 17 Gordini Coupe-Convertible. The R 17 was definitely one of the more exotic cars in the US at the time. And the coupe-convertible version, with its giant sunroof, only enhanced that. This is a rather interesting review, because R&T had tested an R17 two years earlier, and were none too fond of it.

Renault limited the 15/17's lower trims to a four-speed manual transmission, but the 17 TS/Gordini used a five-speed. In the United States, both 15 and 17 were available, though it was not a consistent offering at Renault dealers for its full run from 1971 to 1979.
