Check ahead because Fat Man's Misery is part of the Historic Cave Tour which is closed for walkway improvements until May of 2017. But, there are other excellent cave tours to be taken, so don't skip Mammoth Cave NP. You can view parts of the Historic Tour that remain open by taking the a $5 Self-Guided tour through the Historic Entrance.

Misery, or Fat Man's Misery as it is often referred to, is one canyon that definitely does NOT live up to its name. This is one of my favorites in Zion. Though the hike starts in the park, the technical section is outside of the park, so no permit is necessary, it has enough length to keep the gumbies out, and the scenery is about as good as it.

With a somewhat unreasonable start time of 6:23 am, of course, though just barely. That may not SEEM all that early, but considering I signed on at 10 pm the night before, it certainly felt pretty early.
