November 30, 2018 shares After leaving Catania on our Sicilian road trip, we spent a few glorious days in Siracusa. I could have stayed for ages. I was utterly charmed by the sun-bleached buildings, the bright blue sky, the blazing sun, and the brilliant flowers that spilled over crumbling walls.

Two places actually. Sort of. We're not really sure why we decided to go against various familial and follower exhortations that Syracuse and Ortigia were amongst their favourites in Sicily (part stubbornness, part feeling that it's our job to find the alternative), and yet we did.

The only beach located in Ortigia is the small, pebbled Spiaggia di Cala Rossa located on the southern end of the island: it has free access but is best in the morning hours before shadows creep in the early afternoon. With a car, you can also reach the nearby beaches at Arenella, Fontane Bianche or Vendicari Natural Reserve.
