In 1977 the Dutch entrepreneur Sander van Gelder acquired the resort out of receivership after it had struggled financially following the 1974 Carnation Revolution. Forty years later, after having been successful in the jewelery business, he acquired the Vale do Lobo development, which had been founded in 1962 by Trusthouse.
