Construída, ao que tudo indica, sobre a antiga mesquita muçulmana, o primeiro impulso edificador da Sé de Lisboa deu-se entre 1147, data da Reconquista da cidade, e os primeiros anos do século XIII, projeto em que se adotou um esquema idêntico ao da Sé de Coimbra, com três naves, trifório sobre as naves laterais, transepto saliente e cabeceira tripartida, modelo essencialmente de raiz.
